Simulated Work Experience Project

The two-week graduation film working experience is finally over, I am extremely grateful for this experience, which not only gave me an early experience of the whole process of making graduation film by 2nd year students, but also I provided my design ideas and production experience for my graduation film next year.

My partner is 2nd year student Li Jiayue. In the process of cooperation, my role is scene modeler and scene animator. Scene modelers and scene animators need to complete the props, scenes and other models according to the request of animation. Usually in character animation, different scenes create different environments for characters, and different environments set off different emotions of characters.

Li Jiayue’s story is mainly composed of 2D and 3D animation. In the story, there is a hero and a heroine. The 3D main scene is an amusement park. The ferris wheel, pirate ship and merry-go-round are the main facilities in the amusement park, and other facilities are used as the auxiliary of the scene. In addition, the background and characters should be more stylized. After many discussions, we finally decided to choose lowpoly style animation. My main work is to help Li Jiayue to complete a lowpoly version of the playground, and attach appropriate materials and animation for the playground.

It took me about 10 days to complete this cooperation project. In the first few days, I completed the main model of the big amusement park as soon as possible. I asked Li Jiayue for her opinions on my work, and she gave me feedback that pirate ship and ferris wheel are the main facilities, I can do a close-up and add some details for the two main facilities, while others keep going. Besides, the texture can be more fairy tale style. According to her suggestion, I further optimized the model and completed the model texture. After finished the texture, it came to the animation part. I found that the buffer in the animation is very important. I applied the animation motion law of small ball motion I learned last year to the pirate ship. The longer the pirate ship stays in the air, the more amazing the movement of the pirate ship rushing down. The most challenging part is how to make the roller coaster cross the track smoothly when I made the roller coaster animation, which took me a long time to deal with it. At the end of the work, I use cameras from different angles in the scene and render the animation.

Through this cooperation, I have gained a lot. First of all, I can make my models more stylized; In terms of material selection, I can choose more expressive colors. Secondly, I learned how to make the effect of 3D scene with standard materials, and I also learned a very simple way of rendering: Maya software rendering, which not only saves a lot of time in the production of works in 3D, but also the final effect is very attractive. I think this should be what I gain the most. Nevertheless, I also learned how to use locator to make binding animation, and I think the animation projects may contact the animation between characters and objects sometimes, so I will apply my experience in making locator animation to my future exercises, too.
